The Charlevoix Circle of Arts invites the public to the opening reception of “Norman Brumm: A Retrospective” on Friday August 8th from 5:30 – 7:30 pm at the Charlevoix Circle of Arts, 109 Clinton Street.
The exhibit pays tribute to the well-known Charlevoix artist who created a legacy of art and appreciation for nature during his 40-year career as a professional artist in the Charlevoix area. Norman recently passed away on February 29, 2008.
An array of work from Brumm’s distinguished career will be on display and some available for purchase including paintings in oil, acrylic, watercolor and pen and ink drawings. Although formally trained as a painter, Brumm was most known for his enamel on copper sculptures. He was introduced to the technique after he met and married Judith Wedemeier in 1966. He enthusiastically embraced the medium and relished the opportunity to recreate that which he loved in nature. The retrospective will include these early works as well as his sophisticated pieces, which came later in his career.
A few highlights of this career include: His wall hanging of Apple Blossoms was presented to President Gerald R. Ford in the White House; His sculpture of Pine was given to the Empress of Japan and Beatrice; and Queen of the Netherlands, requested one of his works.
His creations, much of which were purchased from his Charlevoix gallery, are found in the homes of art and nature lovers around the globe.
The exhibit, which includes an educational display on the enameling and sculptural process, will be available through Labor Day Weekend. Gallery hours are 12-4pm, Tuesday through Sunday or by appointment for groups. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
The community art show, “Look About You” which includes works inspired by the beauty of Charlevoix is also on exhibit throughout the month of August.

“Look About You,” features over 150 pieces inspired by the beauty of the area . The exhibit opened on June 27th with a fundraising reception enjoyed by nearly 100 artists and patrons. Area restaurants donated catered appetizers as well as champagne, sparkling cherry juice and coffee.
“I’ve been waiting 40 years for this,” exclaimed Charlevoix resident, Ruth Willis after listening to presentations by Charlevoix Circle of Arts board members, Kathryn Lobenherz and Todd Warner during which they outlined the vision of the organization.
The exhibit is open daily except Monday from 12:00 - 4:00 pm and other times by appointment.
